INTRODUCTION TO PLANETARY GEAR BOX

The Planetary Gear Box is a power transmission mechanism where the speed of the servo motor is reduced to the desired speed & at the same time it increases the torque at the output of the gear box. The planetary gear box consists of four main elements Sun Gear, Planet Gears, Planet Carrier & Ring Gear. The sun gear is at the centre & planet gears revolve around the sun gear so the name planetary gear box. The power from the motor is transmitted to the sun gear which rotates with high speed. A set of 3 planet gears which are equally spaced with the help of planet carrier, revolves & rotates between the fixed ring gear & the sun gear. Due to this arrangement the speed at the output is reduced & result in increased torque value. We can increase the stages of the gear box to get very high reduction ratios. Planetary gear box has high efficiency & high accuracy due to which it is very much suitable for high speed applications. The planetary gear boxes are available inline & right angled also.

The gear box should have higher linear stiffness which means resistance against unnecessary displacement or rotation. The higher the linear stiffness, the stiffer & better the gear box. The linear stiffness depends upon the pinion size. The smaller pinion would lead to the high linear stiffness when the feed force is constant. For Laser Cutting application linear backlash should be more concerned & not the radial backlash. Smaller the pinion diameter smaller the linear backlash which results in better finished product. Since Planetary Gear Box is very much compatible for above characteristics, it is widely used in laser cutting machines.
